1870-71 UK 240x300 G1 Engravings from the Illustrated London News. Huxley's portrait, based on a photo by Elliott and Fry, appeared on 17 September 1870. Caption reads "Professor Huxley, President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science". Darwin's portrait, based on a c1867 (horizontally inverted) photo [24] by E. Edwards, appeared on 11 March 1871, along with a favourable review of the Descent of Man. Caption reads "Charles R. Darwin, author of the Origin of Species".

1871 190x310 G3 "Men of the Day" lithograph caricatures from Vanity Fair. Huxley, drawn by "Ape" (C. Pellegrini), appeared on 28 January 1871, accompanied by this text. The caption reads "A great Med'cine-man among the Inqui-ring Redskins". Darwin, drawn by "Spy" (L. M. Ward), appeared on 30 September 1871, with this text. The caption reads "Natural Selection".

1883 115x160 G7 Engravings from the January 1883 Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which accompanied an article by A. R. Wallace entitled "The Debt of Science to Darwin". The frontispiece portrait (G7) is a Thomas Johnson engraving of a c1874 photo by Leonard Darwin. Other engravings depict scenes around Darwin's home at Downe, and some of these were altered and recycled for use in Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly a few years later (see below).

1888 USA 115x125 G16 Engravings from an article entitled "Darwin", from the June 1888 issue of Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly. G16 is a portrait based on a c1867 (horizontally inverted) photo [24] by E. Edwards, or more likely, on the Illustrated London News engraving of this photo. Other engravings depict the Beagle, a page from Darwin's notebook, and  scenes around Darwin's home and grounds. Some of these images appeared in the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine in 1883, and have been altered (for example, Darwin's figure has been added) and reused.
